Krishna Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna at midnight on Ashtami, the eighth day of the waning moon in Bhadrapada (Shravana in the Amanta calendar). In 2026 it was observed on Friday, 4 September, with devotees fasting all day and holding the main puja at Nishita, the Hindu midnight.
When is Janmashtami in 2026, 2027 and 2028?
Janmashtami is fixed by Ashtami tithi at midnight, with extra weight given to Rohini nakshatra, the star under which Krishna was born. When the two do not line up neatly, Smarta and Vaishnava (ISKCON) calendars can choose different days.

Significance and story
A birth in a prison cell
Kamsa, the tyrant king of Mathura, heard a prophecy that the eighth child of his sister Devaki would kill him. He threw Devaki and her husband Vasudeva into prison and killed each of their children as soon as they were born. When the eighth child, Krishna, arrived at midnight, the story says the guards fell into a deep sleep, the chains fell away and the prison doors swung open. Vasudeva placed the baby in a basket and carried him across the flooded Yamuna, with the serpent Shesha spreading its hoods to shelter them from the rain. In Gokul he left Krishna with the cowherd chief Nanda and his wife Yashoda, and brought their newborn daughter back to the cell.
Why midnight matters
Because Krishna was born in the middle of the night, the main puja is held at Nishita Kaal, the eighth muhurta of the night. Temples ring bells and blow conches at that moment, and devotees greet the newborn god with songs and lullabies.
The child, the friend, the teacher
Janmashtami celebrates every side of Krishna: the butter-stealing child of Gokul, the flute player loved by Radha and the gopis, the hero who finally ended Kamsa's rule, and the charioteer who taught Arjuna the Bhagavad Gita on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. For many families the festival is less about a single story and more about welcoming a beloved child into the home.
How to do Janmashtami puja (vidhi)
- The day before: Eat only one simple meal, so the body is light for the fast.
- Morning: Bathe early, clean the puja space and take a sankalpa to keep the Janmashtami fast, stating how you will observe it (waterless, with fruit, or with fasting foods).
- Decorate a small cradle (jhula) or platform with flowers, leaves and lights for Bal Gopal, the infant Krishna. Many homes also set up a jhanki, a little scene of Mathura, the prison or Gokul.
- Through the day, sing bhajans, read the Bhagavata Purana's account of Krishna's birth, or chant "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya".
- At Nishita (midnight): Bathe the idol in panchamrit, a mix of milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar, then rinse it with clean water.
- Dress the idol in new clothes and jewellery, add a peacock feather and a small flute, and place it in the cradle.
- Offer tulsi leaves, flowers, incense and a ghee lamp, along with makhan-mishri (butter and sugar crystals), panjiri, fruit and sweets.
- Perform aarti, then gently rock the cradle while singing lullabies and festive songs.
- Parana: Break the fast the next day after sunrise. Tradition prefers to wait until both Ashtami and Rohini have ended, although many families break it after the midnight puja or after the morning worship.
Regional variations
- Mathura and Vrindavan: Krishna's birthplace and childhood home celebrate for days, with Raas Leela dramas and temples full until long past midnight.
- Maharashtra: Mumbai, Thane and Pune are famous for Dahi Handi. Teams of young men (govindas) build human pyramids to break a pot of curd hung high above the street, re-enacting Krishna stealing butter.
- Gujarat: The Dwarkadhish temple at Dwarka, Krishna's later kingdom, draws huge crowds, and homes sing folk songs through the night.
- Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala: Known as Gokulashtami or Sri Krishna Jayanti. Families draw tiny footprints in rice flour from the doorway to the puja room, as if the child Krishna had walked in, and prepare sweets such as seedai and appam. Kerala calls the day Ashtami Rohini.
- Odisha and West Bengal: Devotees fast until midnight, and the next day, Nanda Utsav, celebrates Nanda's joy at the birth.
- Manipur: Krishna is worshipped in the Vaishnava temples of Imphal with devotional dance and music.
- ISKCON temples worldwide: Celebrations follow the Vaishnava date, with kirtan, a midnight abhishek and a large feast the next day.
Frequently asked questions
When was Janmashtami in 2026?
Krishna Janmashtami 2026 was observed on Friday, 4 September 2026, with the main puja at midnight. It falls on Krishna Ashtami of Bhadrapada in the Purnimanta calendar, which is Shravana in the Amanta calendar. Dates follow the Mumbai panchang.
When is Janmashtami in 2027?
Krishna Janmashtami 2027 falls on Wednesday, 25 August 2027, according to the Mumbai panchang, when Ashtami and Rohini nakshatra combine around midnight. Dahi Handi is generally held the next day. Check your sampradaya's calendar, as Smarta and Vaishnava dates can differ.
Why are there sometimes two dates for Janmashtami?
Smarta tradition gives priority to Ashtami tithi at midnight, while Vaishnava tradition, followed by ISKCON, favours Ashtami tithi with Rohini nakshatra and never keeps the fast on a Saptami day. When the tithi and nakshatra fall unevenly, the two groups can celebrate on consecutive days.
What do you eat during the Janmashtami fast?
Many devotees keep a full fast until midnight. Others take fruit, milk, makhana, sabudana or kuttu (buckwheat) dishes and avoid grains, onion and garlic. After the midnight puja, Krishna's prasad of makhan-mishri, panjiri and sweets is shared before the formal parana the next day.
What is Dahi Handi?
Dahi Handi is a game held the day after Janmashtami, especially in Maharashtra. Teams called govindas form human pyramids to break a clay pot of curd or butter hung high above the street, recalling how the child Krishna and his friends stole butter in Gokul.
